This image was made while hiking the John Muir Trail. Camping at Guitar Lake you can't help but look up at the next goal: the slopes of Mt Whitney. We rose at about 3am the next day so we could summit Whitney before the masses made it up top. It seemed like it would be inappropriate to end our long walk in the wilderness with a crowd on the summit of the highest peak in the contiguous 48. The plan worked. There were two other people at the summit, but one was half asleep, and the other was a really nice guy. We celebrated with hugs and a couple of calls home, and then turned tail for the long, long hike downhill to Whitney Portal.
