Sunset in Evolution BasinPosted by Rand (Laie, United States) on 30 October 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. This image was made while hiking the John Muir Trail. Much to my dismay, spectacular light never developed while in Evolution Valley. However, after the sun had dropped below the horizon, I did get some nice color. I made this image by metering on the sky without the mountains in the frame, locking in the exposure, and recomposing the image. That may seem like a lot of work, since in the digital age you can just trip the shutter and fix everything later. But I remember how satisfying it was to make that perfect image with film. Photography seemed more cerebral then. Don't get me wrong, I love all that digital brings to the table, but that doesn't mean we have to forget the art of exposure that used to be what defined us as photographers.
